Lab 2: HTML & Map Mashups

1/26/22:

I started my HTML website. I really enjoyed playing around with the code. I added a bunch of links and personalized my home page. It’s kind of cool. I have done some HTML work before but really didn’t like it because I could not get it to work and was falling behind in the group demo.

1/27/22:

I created a WordPress blog. I hassled with it and after 45 minutes I had only customized the landing screen. It was very difficult to do things. In addition, I couldn’t figure out how to connect buttons to pages and after watching a bunch of help videos, I still could not get it to work. I decided to use Wix.com instead since I have used it before (in middle school) to create my Porcupines vs. Hedgehogs website. It’s still out there…somewhere. Wix.com worked much better and I uploaded my nature pictures. Maybe I’ll upload my favorite food photos too.

1/28/22:

I have completed the customizations of my Wix.com site. I have tabs for all 10 lab blogs. My “about me,” “links,” and “blog home” pages are looking great. I might change some things in the future, but for now they are good. I added my blog for lab 1.

In addition, I continued to customize my HTML pages. I did something wrong since I accidentally linked my maps page to Alex’s (a student who previously took this class and used the same computer I am using) maps page to the point of my maps page becoming Alex’s page. I am not sure how this happened, and I could not figure out how to fix it. As a result, I deleted my maps page and made a new one. I renamed all my pages to end in “_sd” in the hopes that this issue won’t arise again.

HTML Elements on “index.htm”:

  1. A picture of me (located in the HTML folder)

  2. Changed the width of the picture of me

  3. Many links that lead to different websites

  4. A full-page horizontal line

  5. A shortened horizontal line

  6. Bolded text

  7. Unnumbered lists

  8. Changed font size of my page header/name

  9. Changed the color of my page header/name to “DodgerBlue”

  10. Italicized text

  11. Used square bullets

Table Work

  1. Added a table

  2. Changed the thickness of the table border

  3. Changed the width of the table

  4. Changed the color of the table (who knew "PapayaWhip" is a color?)

I started making my Google Maps Map Mashup for South Carolina. I updated the map to focus on South Carolina (specifically the capital) instead of Ohio, like it was originally programmed to. I learned how to use FileZilla FTP. I ran into a problem because the site where I was supposed to upload my pages did not exist. For now I am on hold...

The renaming of my index page to end in _sd was a mistake since the OWU website didn't recognize it and I kept getting "forbidden." I resolved this though. My webpages are live online! Another problem I had was my Map Mashups showed not only my South Carolina sites but also Google's worldwide sightseeing tour. It turns out I forgot to uncheck the box for the sightseeing tour when I was saving my South Carolina sites. After fixing this it still showed the sightseeing tour sites for some reason. I renamed the file from mapsites.kml to mapsites2.kml and this solved the issue.
