Lab 8: Animation
4/6/22
Definitions:
-
Layout View: Go to the bottom left of ArcMap to activate it; it is the small page icon. This window allows you to add a title, neatline, legend, and other cosmetic stuff around or on your map.
-
Layout Menu: It shows you what you can do while in Layout View. Also, this is where you change the zoom of your screen; if you use the magnifying glass it changes the scale of the map.
-
Layout Toolbar: This toolbar only appears in Layout View. It has page zoom in, out, whole page, 100%, and level, page pan, previous and next page, toggle draft mode, focus data frame, change layout, and data driven pages.
-
Title: Go to the insert tab while in Layout View and click title to insert it. You can edit and move the title.
-
Neatline: Go to the insert tab while in Layout View and click neatline to insert it. It is a line that helps you know where the trim the maps so they are practically the same size and don't jump around when you try to animate them. The neatline goes around the data frame.
-
.png file: PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. They are typically of higher resolution and support lossless data compression.
-
APNG: This stands for Animated Portable Network Graphics. It is essentially a GIF but of higher quality.

Any problems with this lab and solutions to the problems:
-
I had problems with the neatline and somehow I managed to have 4 on top of each other. In addition, I was unsure if we were allowed to touch the data frame since other instructions said not to zoom in using the buttons so as not to mess with the data frame. Also, for some reason I thought the neatline had to line up with the data frame. I asked the professor and got my confusion cleared up.
-
My APNGs have some wiggle but it's not that bad. It's very hard to make them the same.
-
I had to refresh myself on HTML for this lab. I think my biggest problem wasn't reading carefully. I couldn't figure out why my maps weren't showing up but then I realized it was because they weren't in the same folder, but if I better read the instructions I would have known that.
