Lab 9: ArcGIS Online

4/13/22

Discuss how the creation of your basic web map app went and any problems along the way:

  • It went ok. The classification scheme was time-consuming since I couldn't import the scheme from layer to layer; I had to do each map individually. I figured out how to make the legend values go beyond the data for the layers. Before I figured it out, the map legend would max out at the lowest and highest population change values for each layer, which is a problem because I needed the same legend for all 12 of my layers. I figured out my tip for Lab 10! It will be how I figured out how to make the legend values go beyond the data for each of the layers. I couldn't figure out how to change the color of the control box, so I launched my app and said I would figure it out later. Looking at ArcGIS Online on the computer in the lab revealed where to change the style. On my personal computer the style change section didn't show up, maybe I didn't scroll enough. I tried to change the style of the control box, but it wouldn't save, it would only "save as" and when I "saved as" it didn't show the style changes I made and I couldn't "save" on my "saved as" map. So, I created a totally new web map and made that work.

What is a hosted feature layer and why is it important?

  • Hosted feature layers help visualize data on top of a basemap, such as style and labels. They support vector feature querying, visualization, and editing. They offer the most flexibility, scalability, and compatibility across ArcGIS. ArcGIS Web AppBuilder can use hosted feature layers to build web maps. In this lab we made a hosted feature layer and a web app.

Other things ArcGIS Online can do besides a basic web app:

  • It can make websites catered towards maps (StoryMaps)

  • It can make surveys and show that inputted data in a dashboard and/or map

  • It can enrich your maps with data from the Living Atlas
